Freedom to travel safely for M and his family

A day out used to be out of reach
For M and his family, a day out used to take weeks of planning and still often ended early.
M is a young child living with pituitary dysgenesis and septo-optic dysplasia. His conditions mean he needs daily injections to stay well, and his medication must be kept within a strict temperature range at all times. Even short journeys carried real risk.
The challenge of travelling with complex medical needs
Before receiving support, the family managed trips using ice in a flask with a temperature monitor. However, when the temperature became unstable, which happened often, they had no choice but to turn back. A day at the seaside, something many families take for granted, was simply out of reach.
M’s family already faces significant monthly costs connected to his care: specialist nappies, bed pads, numbing cream for injections, therapy sessions and a home tutor. Although M receives Disability Living Allowance, these costs leave little room for anything beyond the essentials. Because of this, equipment that would allow the family to travel safely with his medication was not something they could fund alone.
The fridge that changed everything
Through Longleigh’s individual grants, the family received a portable medication fridge and a power bank. With his medication now stored safely at the correct temperature away from home, M’s family can travel with confidence.
M’s mum shared what the grant has meant to them:
“I can’t thank you enough. It’s going to be life changing for my little boy and us. It means we will be able to take him away now.”
New possibilities for M and his family
Since receiving the equipment, M’s grandparents have surprised the family with a four-day Christmas break at Butlin’s, a trip that simply would not have been possible before.
For M, it means the chance to enjoy the same everyday experiences as other children. For his family, it means time together outside the home, without the worry that used to come with every journey.
