Finding Breathing Space: Sarah’s Story

Sarah and her partner* faced financial difficulty when she left her job and her partner was diagnosed with cancer. Despite receiving Universal Credit, bills and travel costs for hospital appointments left them with nothing to cover essentials.

Longleigh awarded a grant, that covered utilities, food, and petrol for hospital visits. Sarah said:

Sarah’s experience

“The money gave us the breathing space to focus on my partner and his health. The whole experience was stress-free, and the support arrived just when we needed it most.”

The grant helped them avoid rent arrears, budget effectively, and feel more secure. Sarah encourages others in similar situations to reach out:

“Take a deep breath, listen, follow their advice and you won’t go wrong. Longleigh has given us confidence that there is light at the end of the tunnel.”

Common questions

What is a Longleigh individual grant?

A Longleigh individual grant provides practical support to help Stonewater and Mount Green customers cover essential costs.

This can include help with:

  • Heating and eating
  • Essential household items, such as beds, washing machines, fridges and sofas
  • Education, training and employment costs

The aim is to support people with the basics they need to feel safe, warm and settled at home, or to move forward with work or learning.

Individual grants are currently available only to Stonewater customers.
To be eligible, you must be a Stonewater customer at the time your application is received.

Applications must be made on your behalf by a Stonewater member of staff.

If you are not already in contact with someone at Stonewater, you can email customers@stonewater.org to start the process.

You will also need to meet one of our grant pathways and provide supporting information. The Stonewater member of staff supporting you will explain what is needed and guide you through the application.

We cannot guarantee how long it will take for an application to be submitted to us, as this depends on individual circumstances.

Once we receive an application, we aim to review it as quickly as possible.
Where grants involve items being ordered or delivered, timescales may vary depending on our approved suppliers. We always try to avoid delays and keep things moving.

A flooring grant can help with carpet or vinyl for key living areas in your home.

This includes:

  • Living rooms or lounges
  • Bedrooms
  • Hallways
  • Stairs

We are not able to provide flooring for kitchens or bathrooms.

Longleigh grants are focused on essential items and costs that help people feel safe, warm and settled in their home. We are not able to support garden clearance, garden furniture, or decorating.
