How Ruthlyn Turned Longleigh’s Helping Hand Into Lasting Change

An older lady with short grey hair is standing outdoors, leaning on a surface. The person is wearing a light purple sweater and a gold necklace with a pendant. In the background, there are blurred elements including trees, a brick wall, and part of a car. The top right corner has the logo of "Longleigh Foundation" with the tagline "making grants to improve lives in the social housing sector." At the bottom of the image, there is an orange banner with white text that reads "Longleigh's Impact."

Ruthlyn* contacted Longleigh Foundation for support after moving into her new home in 2022. She was part of a close-knit community where neighbours supported each other by attending coffee mornings and bingo sessions. But the cost-of-living crisis, soaring fuel prices, and rising service charges soon took a toll on their daily lives.

Discovering Longleigh

Ruthlyn discovered Longleigh through a Stonewater newsletter but admitted she was initially sceptical, thinking there might be a catch. After speaking with the Team at Longleigh, she was surprised at how genuine and supportive they were. Encouraged by her positive experience, she shared the information with her neighbours. Altogether, seven Individual Grant applications were submitted and approved, including hers.

The grants varied depending on each household’s needs and made an immediate difference. For Ruthlyn and her neighbours, the support included 12 weeks of food vouchers, a new double bed, a wardrobe, a freezer, and a cooker. For one neighbour with a heart condition who required a special diet, this help was particularly life-changing.

Efficiency and Professionalism

Ruthlyn described Longleigh as one of the most efficient organisations she’d ever worked with, praising our Individual Grants Officers Ingrid and Tess for their professionalism and kindness. “The process was quick, supportive, and stress-free,” she said. “The immediate relief was remarkable, and the grants made such a difference to our lives.”

Strength in Community

Thanks to the help she received, Ruthlyn is now in a more comfortable position and is giving back to her community by volunteering her time. She helps others with paperwork and safeguarding their wellbeing, drawing on her personal experience of the struggles they face.

“It’s nice to see people’s happiness when they can do something as simple as get their shopping,” Ruthlyn said.
